The old Chinese monk Phra Bill mentions was Venerable Master Chin Kung, and his admonition is correct. He goes on to say that this is because monks have lived off food offered to them sincerely by generous laypeople. If a monk leads a debauched life, he is stealing from the sangha, which is one of the worst kinds of offences.

However, I have found that the presence of monks on social networking sites really encourages me in my practice...they can post links to Dhamma websites, share articles on Buddhism and encourage good moral behaviour. Most of the monks I know with social networking pages use them for that purpose alone, which is very helpful for people who might otherwise use social networking carelessly without a thought for morality.

great article... I am a American monk.. I see the problems raised above first hand.. you see younger monks on the internet, flirting with young girls, some shopping, and some actually reading Buddhist articles. How to draw the line, is a difficult challenge.. should abbots ban all internet? try to police the monks under his tutelage? I don't have an answer... I believe you have to go back to the original source.. The Buddha... he said all monks have to police their selves and their own actions... we must all know our own bad habits and faults and correct them ourselves... One old Chinese Buddhist monk, says, we must practice earnestly in renouncing worldly life, for if we do not achieve, we will fall into the Three Bad Realms..
