The Contemperary Crips & Bloods of Thailand: Siamese Color Wars

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21MRv6mFbrL._SL500_AA280_.jpgAll over the Thai media in recent times has been the colored shirt political rivalries infesting the Siamese political and public arenas. Initially headlined by the pro (current) government yellow shirts, known formerly as PAD (Peoples Alliance for Democracy), and their bitter opposition, pro ex-Thaksin-government red shirted rivals, or PAAD (Peoples Alliance Against Dictatorship).

As world economic turmoil continues to manifest across local markets, and many more find their pockets thinning, bitter political propagandists seize opportunity, attracting idle citizens to rally on the streets of Bangkok and Pattaya as the Thai New Year Songkran week long festival swings into motion this second week of April.

And now, it appears the Thai ‘Bloods’ have a new enemy: the blue shirts, supposedly neutral from the PAD and PAAD , but widely believed to be a new fraction of PAD, pro government supporters. While this time of year is typical for war on the streets, the standard arsenal of water guns has been converted to clubs, tear gas and real guns, particularly in the latest clash in Pattaya, ending in a declared state of emergency haultiing the ASEAN summit meeting being held there after Red and Blue shirted mobs clashed head on.

It’s not the first of Thai civil street clashes, and it won’t be the last. Some might recall the local war between Red and Green shirts in Prachuap province over the building of a factory. No matter what the situation at hand, Thais love their colors–in fact there is a color for everyday that is custom to wear according to the day. However, these colors are rapidly being exploited by all this unrest mess, causing common citizens to avoid the usual colorful aesthetic expression.

Pretty soon, the truly neutral citizen will only be able to express their purity in theit birthday suit!
