Me … Myself ขอให้รักจงเจริณ (2007) : Thai film review movie
Me…Myself ขอให้รักจงเจริณ (Ko hai ruck joang jarern: Let [this] love be lasting) is a 2007 Thai film by Poangput Wachirabunjoang ผงษ์พัฒน์ วชิรบรรจง starring Ananda Everingham อนันดา เอเวอร์ริ่งแฮม and Chainun Manomaisuntipaap ฉายนันทน์ มโนมัยสันติภาพ. At first glance of the cover and title, I thought it was a Korean soap opera, but after recognising the Thai names/actors and reading the back cover blurb, I was convinced to pay the 109 baht for the VCD.
I’m not sure what I was expecting,–perhaps a cheesy Asian romantic of heartbreak and new found love with the typical predictable happy ending, but I must give props to Poangput on the creative twist in this one.
The movie starts out with the Heroine, Aum (Chainun) running over the hero (Ananda) at night time. Aum, who is depressed about a recent heartbreak and extra burden of looking after her 10 year old orphaned nephew, is initially reluctant to follow the doctors and police orders to take responsibility for the man who has lost all his memory (though fully comprehensive) including his own name and identity. The only posession he had on him was a necklace with the name ‘Tan’ on it so that is what he goes by for the rest of the movie.
Tan moves in with Aum and her nephew Aom. A leads to B, and B leads to C, and anyone could guess that a romantic chemistry soon develops between the two and after beating around the bush for several scenes, eventually get down to business.
As time passes on, Tan is unable to recall much more than super quick flashes uninterpretable to the viewer…something dark…something exteme..some other girl. As Tan and Aum fall deeper in love, the less they want Tan’s memory to return for fear that his past will reveal another woman or life standing in the way of the current wave of blissful happiness.
Then the police call and announce that they caught a few thiefs and recovered a mobile phone they believed to belong to Tan. On the mobile phone is a picture of a beautiful girl and the name Tanya, which is assumed to be Tan’s girlfriend. This is where it starts getting strange..
If I revealed the any more detail in the rest of the film, there would be no art in watching it live so I’ll stop right here as I do recommend anyone with a spare two hours to watch it.
While some of the premises are unrealistic i.e. police forcing a young beautiful single girl to take home a strange man, and half of the movie is typical thai soap opera cheesy romance, the overall plot and outcome were quite creative and effective in getting the ‘what if’ juices flowing. This is one of those movies that you need to watch out the entire flick to fill in all the dark clouds created throughout the plot, and then in the after taste of it all shall you develop an appreciation for such a work of art.
