Sunshine (Danny Boyle – 2007) *Movie Review*

Any new title fitting into the Sci Fi genre that offers a realistic or at least semi believable future scenario is always worth a viewing IMO.

Directed by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting and 28 days later) and written by Alex Garland, this recent flick might keep certain action and sci-fi addicts’ attention through a better part of it, and may disappoint others. I don’t get opportunity to watch much English language media these days so I’m for the most part content. Though I bought the DVD, it’s not likely I’ll watch it habitually, but could find myself giving it a second look on a rainy day.

Following is a semi-overview of the film covering most of the plot (though I’ll leave out the ending) so if you don’t like plot spoilers, stop right here.

The year is 2057, and our very own sun is soon to die, threatening to end life on earth. Humankind’s only remaining hope is with a group of eight specialized expert technicians and scientists, sent on a spaceship, Icarus II to plant a super bomb in the sun, which theoretically is supposed to create a minor big bang, and somehow make the sun have an instant rebirth (I’m no physicist so can’t elaborate further than this).

Another major plot entity is that seven years prior, another space ship (Icarus I), also armed with a super bomb, was sent on the same mission but wasn’t successful and wasn’t heard from again. Somewhere around Mercury, Icarus II crew receives a distress signal from the long lost Icarus I and the plot begins to thicken.

The crew is split whether to detour their mission to rendezvous with the lost spaceship and put the decision with the head physicist who with difficulty, reasons that in the mission had two bombs, they would have two chances to complete their mission, and thus worth the detour, for there would be no more opportunity to create another super bomb, since building the last bomb virtually depleted earth’s resources.

The mission from here begins to become disastrous and jeopardized, and their chances of success become slimmer. Soon, it’s becomes apparent that the crew will be unable to make it back to Earth, but still left with a slim chance to save human kind by delivering the bomb.

Any film regarding the destruction and possible ending of human kind only has one possible ending, logically, but I’ll leave it out of my review/commentary just to keep the suspense alive for those who actually want to but haven’t seen the film yet.

Enjoy!
