I was sold on to Deja Vu the moment I read the blurb on the back of the DVD; not so much for the basis of some massive terrorist plot and yet another witty hero cop role played by Denzel Washington–what can I say, I dig time travel stories and mind bending parallel universe quantum altering type stories. I find such flicks goldmines for inspiration if not just outright entertainment.
Set in New Orleans, Deja vu’s action begins with a tragic bombing of a Ferry full of Naval crewman and their families during morning celebrations on Fat Tuesday. While investigating the disastrous scene, Federal agent, Doug Carlin (Washington) comes across a beautiful female corpse which upon further examination, show signs suggesting she died days before the tragic bombing.
After sharing his findings with other investigating agents who are dumbfounded, Carlin is invited to lead the investigation at a lab with a top secret surveillance tool, dubbed Snow White. Initially Carlin is told that Snow White, which can only look back exactly 4 days and lacks any ability to rewind or record, is powered by powerful satellites, but Carlin has his suspicions and soon discovers that the device is actually looking back at the past.
What proceeds is high action plot sufficient twist, turns, suspense and paradox exploitation and exploration, as the hero uses Snow White’s quantum technology not only to solve the case, but take it a step further and figure out a way to go back and alter events, and pursue his supposed destiny. I’ll leave it at that and let you enjoy the fun live, so don’t cheat and try to find a full synopsis before watching it for it wouldn’t be worth it that way.
This film deserves props from the director, Tony Scott and Producer Jerry Bruckheimer, among the other main and contributing actors and actresses, namely Paula Patton (heroin), Val Kilmer, Adam Goldberg, Erika Alexander, Elden Henson, and the villain, Jim Caviezel.
