Bangkok’s Best Spot

Out of all the spots, scenes, and attractions of Bangkok greatly publicized in guides and media–from the Grand Palace, Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Wat (temple) Arun to Nana Plaza, Soi Patpong, China Town, and many others, none are more superior than one of my most favorite BKK spots, atop of Thailand’s tallest structure, Baiyoke II.
Thailand's tallest, Baiyoke II soaring over Pratunam neighborhood

Ever since I was kid, I had always been fascinated with skyscrapers. In my high school days, I loved logging on to skyscraper websites to look at pictures of mostly Asian city skyscrapers, particularly Baiyoke II of Bangkok, before I had ever been here.

On my first trip to Thailand back in 2001, I was disapointed that I couldn’t visit Baiyoke II because of group and time constraints, but when I returned to Thailand independently for good in 2002, one of the first things I was sure to do was get the sky view from Baiyoke II. (check out the Siamerican Wanderer’s link to the right to access the archives) It was everything I was expecting and more. In fact, I was happy to find my first Thailand apartment right at the foot of Thailand’s tallest concrete giant at a place called Stella Apartment.

With an open air 360 degree rotating sky-view more than 300 meters off the ground, this is the best place to lose one’s intimidation of the massive metropolis of Krungthep and get the best view of all the city. For a panoramic picture, go to this Bangkok picture , showing 360 degrees of skyline put into one flat 2d picture.

Isn’t she beautiful? Perhaps the huge advertisement takes away some of the beauty value, but I assure you, the view from up top is much more appealing than from the streets below. But don’t take my word for it, next time your in town, head to Pratunam neighborhood (In front of Central World is Rachaparop road, just head north a few blocks, and you can’t miss it) and purchase a skyview ticket which should be under 200 baht, though if your dining at one of the sky lobby restaurants, skyview ticket is included.

So what are you waiting for? I’m confident to say that you shall not be disapointed when you embrace Bangkok from high above. On clear days, you may even catch a glimpse of the Gulf of Thailand in the horizon to the south. Night visits are most popular to catch city lights, but I always preferred daytime skylines, for the contrasts and studying /mapping out location details in my mind.
