After a month-long silence, the Siamerican’s Cyber Journal @ Thaiskale.com is back!

You are probably wondering what happened to January, and why there isn’t any recent blog activity here. That is because the blog was taken down as to transfer web hosts. Previously, the Siamerican Wanderer was using a Thai hosting company paying some 1100 baht (now converts to 34 bucks) per year which was quite limited for hosting space, only allowing me 75 megabytes.

The Siamerican decided to sign up for 1and1.com’s deal home deal of $4.99 per month, which works out to about 1900 baht per year. The difference however is that with 1and1.com, the particular home hosting package with 1and1 allows 120 gigabytes of server space, plus 2 gigabytes of mail space, and two included domain registrations–as well as unlimited amount of domain sharing of hosting space.
I made the mistake to sign up for the Windows server, which doesn’t support mysql databases, which is what I needed for the Wordpress Software. So by the time thaiskale.com and siamerican.com were transferred to 1and1 servers, I couldn’t run the wordpress software, and found out that I could only do that on the Linux server package which cost the same, however, I wouldn’t be allowed to transfer to that package until after 30 days. So, my blog set up on the new server would be delayed until atleast February 5.

So I gave it a rest for the month of January and focused on my University studies, and other family-business obligations. Have six classes which include Modern Presentation Techniques, Critical Reading, Mass Media Communication, College Reading, Marketing Communication, and Statistics for Social Sciences.

The most involving and demanding seem to be Media Communication and Social Stats as well as Critical Reading which has had a few quizzes. I had a self introduction presentation in Modern Presentation on Monday, which I did a brief powerpoint about myself and interests.

On Saturday, in Social Stats, will present about a small survey regarding travel preferences and tendencies, which include frequency and descriptive statistics as organised via SPSS software, as well as powerpoint for the presentation and Microsoft Word for the report.

So anyway, come February 5, logging on to 1and1, a transfer to Linux server was initiated , prompting a re upload of all the data and files of the website. The problems came with the restoring of the backed up mysql database files. That took a lot of googling and reattempting to upload several different mysql backups, finally coming to a syntax error with the mysql files, which found out from here, that had to delete some DEFAULT CHARSET definitions from the database file as different mysql version rules were clashing.

After deleting all the ‘DEFAULT CHARSET =utf8′ from the sql files, the upload and restores worked just fine, and so, the blog is revived.

So as far as the future of the Siamerican’s blogging. The plan is to launch Siamerican.com as the personal reflection and existence analysis blog and keep thaiskale by for Thailand specific entries. When things get rolling rightfully with these two projects, a Thailand-USA.com site is for-coming.

Patience perforce, for all is within due time.

  1. Cheap and Reliable Web Hosting Says:

Seriously, for only a few bucks a month, you can host several of your very own websites, owning all the rights and reaping all the potential income. I can’t think of a reason not to consider it, especially in the age of technology. 1and1.com’s deal is hard to beat. Check it out for yourself. You got nothing to lose!
