A Poor yet Rich Exiled Ex Prime Minister

Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra, Thailand’s ousted premiere has continued to make the news over the preceding months regarding his families latest woes and battle with the Assets Examination Committee (AEC), who froze a big bulk of Thailand’s richest family’s Thailand funds (trust me, it’s more than 99 percent of this blog’s readers will ever dream of having).

For those not keeping up, it’s basically the anti-Thaksin (this hyphenated word ought to be added into the next Thai terminology dictionary–if there is such a thing yet) side supposedly wanting Thaksin and company’s frozen Thailand funds returned to the state by trying to legally convict the former PM with at least one corruption charge out of what seems to be a never ending list refreshed as time marches on. The AEC’s primary charge against the Shinawatra family is for ‘becoming unusually rich during the former leader’s term in office’.

The Shinawatra family’s defense is that they were already rich before the currently exiled leader became prime minister and that Mr. Thaksin had no doings with the family business while serving as PM, while the AEC and company retaliates saying that even though Thaksin transferred the ownership rights to his kin and family as to avoid the legal connections, he still manipulated laws and the system to benefit his business and personal welfare during his reign . I don’t want to get into details about all the allegations and Graft accusations, nor do I waist my passion by taking sides.

I will say, however, that my oppinion of Thaksin Shinawatra is not favorable–not because of allegations of past human rights violations, corruption, or unusual wealth–as is the reasons of most who dislike him. Personally, I’m just sick of hearing about his constant woes about threatening with lawsuits, and demands to regain access to the hundreds of billions of baht that the ‘State’ is trying to take back.

As a supposed Buddhist, should not the man be content that he survived a South Asian coup and lost power comfortably while overseas–retaining his breath of life as opposed to it being ended by an assassin’s bullet? Is he not satisfied that he was still able to access hundreds of billions of more baht overseas that the AEC has no jurisdiction or authority in touching–more than enough to not only keep his family and kin for several generations well off without so much as lifting a finger, but enough to even buy a English Premiere Football club, Manchester City, which I guess wasn’t cheap at all…yet it’s not enough?

If Thaksin or any of his family or people ever get a chance to read this, I hope you can realize yourselves and stop while you’re ahead. Just be happy that you’re alive and still better off than 99 percent of the world’s population. With more untouchable assets and capital than billions of people combined could ever make in 10 years, isn’t it time you start thinking on a global sense and realize you’re intended karma and destiny. By the way, if you wish to save face among many of your fellow Thai citizens, sack the EPL team! There are plenty of more worthy causes. How can you expect the Thai people to believe in you if you could never believe in us?

Just my two baht worth…
