Nakhon Sawan (also spelt Nakorn Sawan, in Thai นครสวรรค์) is Thailand's largest city in the central region outside of Bangkok. Actually, depending how you look at it, Nakhon Sawan can be considered part of the lower Northern region, or upper central region. It's population and size are on par with Thailand's other big dogs---Chiangmai, Nakhon Ratchisima (Korat), Nakhon Sri Thammarat, and Hat Yai. Some recent estimates have the central city limits exceeding well over 150,000 people, not including the surrounding districts and villages. Nakhon Sawan is well known for two main things: 1) Its large Chinese population, and thus its Chinese New Years Celebration attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year and 2) Nakhon Sawan is considered the relative origin of the Jao (Chao) Phraya River. The central fresh market is located on the Western bank of the Ping River, which merges with Nan and Yon rivers to form the Jao Phraya. With such a strategic location, the city has been a major center of trade and commerce for hundreds if not thousands of years.
