As the new year has passed, it's almost time for Thailand 's annual celebrations in honor of the country's future: Children. As the official National Children's Day slogan goes: 'Children are the future of the nation, if the children are intelligent, the country will be prosperous.' Every year speeches given on the second Saturday of January by his majesty the King, the Prime Minister, and other important members of society remind us that this holiday isn't only for the children to have fun, but it's to let them know and realize their 'worthiness' and role for the county's future. So how do we celebrate? Many of us will be relaxing or participating in one of the many activities nationwide: whether it's a picnic at the park, a trip to the zoo, amusement park, army/navy base, or even the parliament building, children 14 and under are welcome to partake in the festivities for a discounted price, and free for most places. Did you know that almost every country in the world has designated a holiday for Children? While the United Nations officially recognizes June 1, as International Children's Day, each country has a different day they celebrate. Most countries celebrations are similar to Thailand 's. In Japan and Korea they use to celebrate boys and girls day on different dates, later combining them into one holiday on May 5. (Same in both countries) In some countries, children get the opportunity to switch roles with adults. In Turkey (April 24), children take over government positions. Taiwan 's (April 4) annual theme lets children become the King and Queen for the day. Wouldn't it be neat if Thailand let the children have control of the parliament? They might even do a better job than the adults are doing. he he he Other Interesting Children Facts: *Children under 14 make up 28 percent of the entire world's population. That's about 1.9 billion kids. *Of Thailand 's 63 million people, roughly 1/3 are children. Of these, 93 percent make it past grade five, while about 83 percent make it to high school. *2.2 million kids worldwide are living with HIV. In Thailand , aprox. 15,000 children under 14 are living with HIV (.08 percent of Thai children population)
